Craft Brewery, Durban and Surrounding, Valley of 1000 Hills:
Standeaven Brewery is a family owned Micro Craft Brewery based on the Standeaven’s farm, situated in Alverstone, just outside of Hillcrest close to Valley of 1000 Hills, 30 km from Durban. Brew Master Shaun Standeaven launched his craft beers at the Durban Good Food & Wine show in 2012, since then his craft beer range has grown and the micro brewery has gone from strength to strength, his craft beers have gone on to win numerous awards.
Voted best craft beer on tap at the SA on Tap festival 2012.
Voted one of the top 10 craft beers in the country by SAB world of Beer National Craft Brewer’s Championship 2013.
Given a Gold Award at 2013 Good Food & Wine for best craft beer in the Craft Beer, Wine and Spirits Section.
The Standeaven Craft Brewery was invited to participate overseas in the international Real Ale competition held by JD Wetherspoon in April 2014, 40 craft breweries from England were invited to participate and 10 international craft breweries were invited from around the world. Shaun flew to Scotland, 22 February 2014 and brewed his African Pale Ale at the Caledonian Brewery in Scotland where his beer was kegged. Shaun then flew back to England to participate in the festival, which was held from the 28th of March to the 13th April 2014. All voting was by the public and at the end of it all, Shaun’s African Pale Ale featured 4th out of a total of 50 craft beers on tap at the festival. Shaun said he felt such pride when he walked into the first JD Wetherspoon and saw his tap on display, with the South African flag displayed proudly. Shaun had an amazing experience that week visiting the various JD Wetherspoon pubs talking to the public and sharing his craft brewing knowledge.
In addition to brewing his stock of craft beers, Shaun is always experimenting with new brews and it is his standard to introduce them at festivals to see what the public think of his creations. The Standeaven Brewery can be found at The Shongweni Farmers Market every Saturday, and Brewery tours will soon be available to the public.
